Is this the first you’ve heard of ComCap16? It’s shorthand for “community capital.” In early 2015, the State of Oregon adopted “new rules to enable a new kind of investing: securities crowdfundingwrites Kristin Wolff, a HATCH Board member in a Medium Post. Explaining how the State of Oregon offered a new exemption in January of 2015 Wolff puts it this way “Think barn raising — the idea that many small contributions can enable very big things.”

This year, the ComCap16 program focuses on how to leverage the new state securities crowdfunding laws to strengthen our nation’s local economies. Attendees include leaders from across the country—from legislators to lawyers, commissioners to community developers—as they connect in Portland to learn how to move investing back home.

Last year’s conference focused on the impact and opportunity introduced by Oregon’s new Community Public Offerings (CPOs), which continues to have a growing influence on the state’s entrepreneurs and locally-minded investors. Barn raising is largely how this new offering became possible as a number of individuals collaborated together to lay the ground work to help local communities diversify and source capital to deepen economic resilience, expand innovation and localize prosperity.

ComCap kicks off Tuesday 4/26 and runs through 4/28, hosted by the folks at Hatch in collaboration with an outstanding line-up of exhibitors, sponsors, speakers and partners. Bringing together economic development professionals, entrepreneurs, consultants, nonprofit professionals, lawyers, policymakers, community leaders and small business aficionados, we’ll explore emerging practices that reveal the new ways citizens are able to invest in locally grown businesses.

If you’re curious what you’ll learn, here’s a sampler of the great mix of skills, expertise and focus of the bright minds joining in to seed thinking, spark innovation and fuel conversations.
